Welcome to Rooted Learning
I’m so glad you’re here. Rooted Learning is a place for teachers, parents, and anyone who cares about kids to find encouragement for the work of teaching, grounded in God’s Word.
Rooted Learning exists to help students grow deep roots in Christ while they discover how God’s world works. Through honest writing, practical classroom wisdom, and devotionals for teachers, I want to encourage educators to care for their students well and to point them to the truth that nothing matters without God.
Founded by Mr. Brazones
A middle school science teacher
Hi, I’m Alexander Brazones, but my students call me Mr. Brazones. Each day I get to help middle schoolers explore how God’s world works through science and learn to use technology wisely and well. It’s work I love, and work I don’t take lightly.
How I came to teaching
Teaching found me before I went looking for it. During my senior year of high school, my classes ended at noon, and I spent my afternoons as a paraprofessional (a classroom aide) for a preschool student with autism. Those afternoons showed me how much it means to walk beside a child as they learn and grow.
I also had an example close to home. My mother has taught her whole career, in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. Watching her, I came to see teaching as a calling: a way of serving others, one student at a time.
My faith story
I grew up in church, but being there my whole life didn’t make me a Christian. We moved often when I was young, and it was hard to put down roots or make lasting connections. I attended a Christian school from fifth grade through my senior year, yet if I’m honest, I was mostly going through the motions. I was a lukewarm Christian.
That changed in my junior year of college, when I got the call that my dad had cancer and needed surgery. At first I was angry with God, and I questioned Him. In time, I realized that God was all I had. I began to depend on Him in a way I never had before, and my faith finally became my own.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
What I want for my students
When my students leave my classroom at the end of the year, I want them to know without a doubt that I truly cared about them and about their learning. I love teaching science and technology, but the most important thing I want them to understand is that nothing matters without God. That’s why I work to build real relationships with my students and to come alongside them in their own faith journeys.
A little more about me
I’m married to my wife, Claire. I started Rooted Learning as a place to share what I’m learning about teaching and to write about faith. Everything here is written from a Christian perspective, because I believe all truth is God’s truth and every subject is a chance to know Him better.
Thank you for stopping by. I hope something here encourages you.
